The Rise of ‘Brotox’: More Men Are Getting Botox Than Ever Before

If you’re not quite ready to go under the knife to get rid of that sagging skin, you can always consider injections, which have become incredibly popular with men.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 400,000 men received Botox injections in 2014, marking a 337% increase since 2000. In addition, over 90,000 men received fillers, an 86% increase since 2000.

Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Timothy Neavin, says his average male Botox client is 50 years old, while men in their 20s and 30s may opt for fillers.

If you decide to give Botox a try, it’s important to choose a doctor who’s experienced with male patients. According to Dr. Whitney Bowe, assistant medical director for cosmetic and laser services at Advanced Dermatology P. C. in New York, there are significant differences in the outcome of injectables in women and men, so the doctor will need to take into account each patient’s muscle mass, muscle fiber pattern and hair distribution. There is widespread consensus that men require higher doses of Botox than their female counterparts.

Here’s a quick guide for those non-invasive fixes:

Botox – for wrinkles and lines
These injectable neurotoxins relax wrinkles. You’ll pay $350 to $550 for a small dose and upwards of $1,100 for large spots like your forehead. It feels like a bunch of tiny needle pricks; afterward skin may feel numb for a few hours and moving some facial muscles may be difficult.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) – for sun damage, broken blood vessels, freckles
If your skin’s a little spotty, intense pulsed light targets pigmentation to clear the complexion ($250 to $600). The procedure causes sun spots and freckles to darken, then flake and fall off after a few days. It’s also useful in combating facial redness brought on by spidery veins and by the residual effects of acne damage. It feels like getting snapped with a hot rubber band.

Fillers – for sunken eyes and cheeks
If you look tired all the time, dermal fillers can be injected beneath the skin of the face to add fullness, fix drooping, and smooth out deep wrinkles and lines ($600 to $1,100). The pain is minimal because the area is numbed, but bruising and soreness are common.
