We, here at ForMen, don’t necessarily fancy ourselves as trend-chasers, but for those of you wondering whether you should be growing out your facial hair longer, fuller and scruffier for the fall, the answer seems to be: no.
According to Karen Lynn Accattato, the key makeup artist and groomer for Empire, those “overboard, scraggly, hipster beards” have jumped the shark, and the “gentleman’s beard,” which Accattato defines as “neat, tight, and waxed” — is in. Think: Jake Gyllenhaal, Idris Elba and Jon Hamm. She insists that sporting a full, unruly beard with a tuxedo is definitely “out”, while a tight, groomed, short beard with formal wear is very “on point”.

If you want to get the look (“the gentleman’s beard”) here are Accattato’s guidelines:
- The hair should only be a quarter to a half inch and no longer than an inch.
- Hair shouldn’t go above the cheekbones or down the neck.
- Hair should be just like a shadow or contour of your face. “I don’t want to see the beard walk into the room before I see you,” Accattato said.
Gone are the days when clean shaven was the only way to look well groomed and this look is a classic look that is easy to accomplish. We, here at Formen, believe that whatever you choose, remember that people feed off your confidence and will quickly accept whatever look you embrace.
