To Prevent Back Pain, Orthotics Are Out, Exercise Is In

Here’s some interesting news: A recent study found that if someone with a history of back pain exercised regularly, he or she would be considerably less likely to suffer from more back pain within a year.

And it doesn’t matter what type of exercise is done. In some of the experiments, the regimens focused solely on strengthening the core and back muscles. In others, the training was more general, combining aerobic conditioning with strength and balance training. No matter what regimen was done, back pain recurrence was lessened.

The study also found the use of back belts and orthotics to be almost completely ineffective, and that people who employed these methods were very prone to experiencing more back pain within a year.

With 80% of Americans likely to suffer from lower back pain at some point in their lives, this study might be monumental.
