A Close Look at Safety Technologies: Reducing Accidents
As auto manufacturing has grown more sophisticated in terms of the analysis of accident data, companies have devised some very useful technologies for reducing the potential for serious types of accidents that occur with frequency. In 2016, for example, some 61 vehicles earned high marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, many of them luxury sedans. These features cannot guarantee that a mishap will never occur, of course, but they may prevent some tragedies. Some widely available technologies include:
- Rear view camera system to assist drivers moving in reverse;
- Advanced collision detection systemsthat warn of impending collisions;
- Sophisticated warnings to alert driverswhen the car drifts out of its lane;
- Tire pressure monitors to notify the driver about tire pressure imbalances or pressure losses;
- Automated parallel parking assist systems;
All of these features will likely help some luxury sedan drivers avoid some types of potential accidents. Studies have shown that sleepy and distracted drivers contribute to many roadway collisions, and some of these features focus on alerting people behind the wheel in advance to possibly unsafe situations.
A Close Look at Safety Technologies: Surviving Accidents
Many new technologies also improve the likelihood of sedan occupants surviving accidents. These features include:
- Extensive airbag systems, including side window airbags and driver knee airbags;
- Sturdier steel frame autobody construction to resist crumpling;
- Stabilizing systems to reduce rollover potential;
- Automation in the vehicle to call for emergency assistance after an accident;
- Child safety seat tethers to hold infant seats more firmly in place.
As automakers continue to improve the durability of vehicles, these safety features assist more sedan occupants in surviving roadside accidents. They cannot guarantee that fatalities won’t occur, yet they do significantly improve the likelihood that passengers will avoid life-threatening harm during many common types of vehicle accidents.
A New Era
The improvements in luxury sedans, and the increasing individualization of vehicle marketing, both promise to revolutionize the marketplace during the next few years. Sedan purchasers already enjoy many excellent new options. In the future, dads may discover even more new, attractive upgrades when buying luxury grade sedans.
