How many days should we be working out to stay “in shape”? Should it be five days a week? Or will two suffice?
According to Shawn Arent, an exercise scientist at Rutgers University, there is a huge difference between working out two and three days a week. While any amount of exercise is an improvement over none at all, if you’re already in decent shape, exercising for just two days a week will not get you much additional benefit.
So the verdict according to Arent: a minimum of three days per week, for a structured exercise program including resistance training. And we should be doing some sort of physical activity every day.
He says exercising three days a week will get you significant gains early on, thereby making you want to increase the number of days you work out. With two days, you don’t get much change because you’re not exercising frequently enough to receive some of the other positive outcomes that come along with it.
ForMen takeaway: A little bit of exercise always trumps no exercise at all. But if you’re serious about getting in shape, take Arent’s advice and do some sort of resistance training at least three times a week.
