Award-winning stuntman Bobby Holland Hanton—who’s filmed battle scenes in HBO’s Game of Thrones, stunt doubled for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Christian Bale’s Batman, and Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern—shares his secret for building both lean muscle (that looks good on camera) and functional strength (that enables him to pull off the stunts required in a blockbuster). His secret: circuit training with bodyweight exercises.
Here’s his favorite circuit routine that won’t take you more than 20 minutes. He tells Men’s Journal that he cycles through six exercises without any breaks and sometimes swaps in dips and calf raises. He advises to start with four rounds and eventually build up to six. Remember to keep your core tight and take as little rest as possible.
- Pull-up (12 reps)
- Push-up (12 reps)
- Bodyweight squats (10 reps)
- Alternating lunges (10 reps each leg)
- Downward dog push-up (9 reps)
- Treadmill sprint (40 seconds at a steep incline)
