Just take one more sip! According to research out of the University of Illinois, we now have more of a reason to drink another glass of water. Researchers found that upping the proportion of plain water consumed by one percentage point—yes, that’s it!—reduced the amount of calories, sugar, sodium, and cholesterol ingested; those who upped it by a cup or two saw even more benefits.

As reported in Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, the researchers analyzed data of 18,311 adults, and found that the average adult consumed 4.2 cups of plain water daily (not including tea or coffee). That equaled a little more than 30% of their total water intake, which included other beverages. But the researchers found that just a “one percentage point increase in the proportion of daily plain water in total dietary water consumption” resulted in eating 8.58 fewer calories, 0.74 fewer grams of sugar, 9.8 fewer milligrams of sodium, and 0.88 fewer grams of cholesterol. And add a whole extra glass or two or three and the numbers grow even more: as many as 205 fewer calories, 18 fewer grams of sugar, 235 fewer milligrams of sodium, and 21 fewer grams of cholesterol.

It’d be interesting to find out the reasons why drinking more water results in consuming fewer calories, sugar, sodium, and cholesterol. But with all the benefits of drinking more water out there, why not have just one more glass … or three?
