Here’s yet another resounding endorsement for HIIT, or high intensity interval training: LiveScience dovetailed the recent study that said you could get fit with only a minute of exercise by getting additional input from Dr. Edward Laskowski, co-director of Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota.

The original study found that a 10-minute interval training workout—which involved just 1 minute of total sprinting time—was just as good as a 45-minute endurance workout done at a moderate pace.
With that in mind, Laskowski recommended this workout regimen:
- Warm up for about 3 minutes
- Do three to four interval cycles comprised of 30 seconds of intense exercise with three minutes of rest in between
- Cool down

Total time? About 17 minutes. That works for us.
Although HIIT seem to be the workout du jour, scientists have yet to research any long-term effects. Laskowski also cautioned that some types of exercise may not be good to perform at high intensities. For example, running may not be good for people with knee arthritis, because this activity is hard on the joints. But people with knee arthritis may still be able to do interval training on a bike or in the pool without damaging their joints.
