Theranos’ Finger-Stick Blood Testing Gets FDA Approval

This is huge news for Theranos. The Silicon Valley bio-tech company announced Thursday that its proprietary blood-testing system has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA approval comes at a good time for Theranos, as on July 3, a bill it co-sponsored in Arizona goes into effect allowing patients in that state to order their own blood work while protecting doctors from lawsuits, as the responsibility for interpreting the results of the tests lie with patients.

The long-stated mission of Elizabeth Holmes, the Stanford dropout who founded Theranos in 2003, is to empower patients to take control of their own health by providing inexpensive blood testing (they currently offer 153 tests for under $10 each) that — if interpreted by doctors in a timely manner — can catch diseases in their earliest stages.

Giving people the ability to understand their own health and to be able to make decisions accordingly are core ForMen principals — so naturally, we not only applaud Theranos, but are wholeheartedly anticipating what they will be broadly enabling in the near future.
